WEST HAVEN, Sept. 27, 2013 — Edith E. Mackrille Elementary School launched this year’s “reading journey” project with a school-wide assembly Friday.

Principal Judith Drenzek read Michael Garland’s “Miss Smith Reads Again” to all students, challenging them to each read 100 pages of books of their choosing per month, either on their own or with a parent. Their reward? Drenzek will temporarily color her hair blue and white (the school colors) in the spring. Last year, Drenzek dressed as a clown for a day to commemorate the students’ reading accomplishments.

Throughout the year, special guests will visit the school to read to students. This year’s theme is “reading around the world.” As students read more pages each month, a paper doll version of Drenzek will move across a map of the world that is displayed in the school, with her journey representing the students’ progress.
